MXW champion eyes first-career world championship podium.
Reigning four-time MXW national champion Charli Cannon is the latest wildcard addition named for the upcoming MXGP of Australia in Darwin on September 19-21, bolstering the Women’s Motocross World Championship (WMX) grid at the Hidden Valley venue.
Cannon, 20, will feature Quad Lock branding on her CRF250R, eyeing what would be a maiden WMX world championship podium finish of her career.
The Queenslander arrives fresh from securing second overall in the American-based AMA Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX) after six rounds of competition, despite sustaining a serious hand injury prior to the season-opening round.
“It’s been a year of lessons, racing injured, winning and losing races, and learning from it all,” commented Cannon. “I’m grateful for the people around me. Quad Lock, SCT Logistics, FLY, Honda, and all of my supporters have stood by me. Without them, I wouldn’t be racing in Darwin or in America.
“I’ve never been on the podium or won a WMX world championship race, but that’s the goal. I’m still not 100 percent after surgery, but I’ve been training harder than ever at the Millsaps Training Facility (MTF) with Colleen Millsaps in America. It’s a process, the improvements don’t come overnight, but I already feel stronger and more prepared than ever.”
The MXGP of Australia is the first time the WMX series has visited the nation, and marks the return of the MXGP championship for the first time in over 20 years, adding further significance to the event.
Honda Racing Australia director Yarrive Konsky added: “Charli has overcome significant challenges this season and still delivered outstanding results. I truly believe she has what it takes to achieve her goals in Darwin.”
